Intergenerational solidarity: strengthening economic and social ties

7-Jan-2010    This paper, by WorldGranny director Mrs. Caroline van Dullemen, was written for the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. It discusses the dire position of elderly people in developing countries in relation to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

In this paper, the UN is urged to invest in intergenerational solidarity by using new approaches on poverty alleviation. Approaches that focus on social protection and pension policies in order to provide new means to households headed by elderly people. Using these approaches will not only alleviate poverty for elderly people themselves, but will have positive intergenerational effects, as it stimulates school enrollment & continuation and improves nutrition for the younger generations.
