India: Shepherd
23-Dec-2009 Shepherd contacted the P&D Network to evaluate their existing micro pension model.
Shepherd is an India based organization, focusing on poverty alleviation programs for women living in rural areas of India, which aims to bring qualitative change in the life of the rural masses in the Madurai District in South-India. In order to do so, Shepherd launched a micro-pension scheme in February 2007, in which 5100 women immediately enrolled. This micro pension scheme has till so far been supported by the local government.
However, the government announced that it will withdraw its support, implying that Shepherd’s micro pension scheme needs to be self-supportive on a very short term. The Pension & Development Network has been contacted by Shepherd with the request to assist them with the realization of a growth in out-reach to 50,000 families in two years, to evaluate the pension model, analyze future possibilities and to organize a workshop to improve the technical knowledge.
Representatives of the P&D Network travelled to India from December 5th – 8th to meet up with Shepherd and gather the necessary information in order to set up a project-group that will work on the Shepherd casus.
